Seakura was established in 2007, out of a pure love of the ocean, for the purpose of growing macro-algae on land-based pools, in a clean environment and in compliance with strict international quality and safety standards.
Behind the brand lies over 13 years of research and development, the result of cooperations with Prof. Yoni Zohar (The University of Maryland) and Dr. Michael Friedlander.
The company is active in producing nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and provides seaweed products to the culinary field.
Sustainable aquaculture is one method of maintaining a balance between the demand for food supplies for the world’s ever-increasing population, and protecting nature, while minimizing environmental damage.
Marine agriculture, like the land-based version, is in the process of taking giant steps, through the understanding that there is a limited quantity of food in the oceans, and that massive, unlimited consumption of food from the sea is liable to lead to serious damage to the marine environment.
Seakura are pioneers in the field of sustainable marine aquaculture in Israel, and have developed advanced technologies which allow land-based seaweed to be grown while protecting the marine environment.
Seakura set environmental protection at the top of their priority list. Seaweed is the fastest growing biomass on our planet. Using photosynthesis as the most efficient way to capture CO2, each 1,000 Kg of dry Seakura seaweed has assimilated 1,200 – 1,500 Kg CO2, 30-40 Kg of nitrates and 2-3 Kg of phosphorus.
A circular economy – the seaweed that assimilated pollutants can be used to make Bio fertilizer, Bio plastics, plant based protein and Bio fuels, aminal feed, etc
